MANNING — Alfred Henry Dunn Sr., 85, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, with family at his side at Riverside Health and Wellness in Smithfield, Virginia. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Sue Wood Dunn (+2003), and his second wife, Eloise Moore Dunn (+2022).

Born Nov. 17, 1938, in Yonkers, New York, he was a son of the late John Joseph Dunn Sr. and Anna Mary Griggs Dunn. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of 21 years, having served in several overseas countries and in combat in Vietnam, where he received a Bronze Star with Valor. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of South Carolina. He was a city carrier for the United States Postal Service for 32 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and was of the Roman Catholic faith.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan T. Armstrong of Sumter; four sons, Col. (Retired) James A. Dunn (Judy) of Smithfield, Virginia, CDR (Retired) Alfred H. Dunn Jr. (Sara Louise) of Lexington, David Paul Dunn (Frieda) of Sumter and John Christopher Dunn (Vicky) of Simpsonville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wives and his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Dunn; two sisters, Anne Mary Dunn and Ellen T. Dunn; two brothers, James A. Dunn and John Joseph Dunn Jr.; and a son-in-law, Master Sgt. Christopher D. Armstrong.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at St. Ann and St. Jude Catholic Church, 1855 Beckwood Road, Sumter.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 14 N. Cantey St., Summerton.
