Update: According to a news release from Sumter Police Department, shooting suspect Jaelon Jackson is in custody after turning himself into authorities tonight without incident.

Four suspects are in custody while one — the suspected shooter — is still wanted for the Sunday shooting death of a 17-year-old Crestwood High School student.

Josh Goodman, of Dalzell, was found with a gunshot wound in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Peach Street after police responded to a shots fired call about 1:45 p.m., according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department. Goodman was transported to Palmetto Health Tuomey, where he later died.

Investigators have determined Goodman was shot during an attempted robbery while meeting with the five individuals to purchase marijuana, McGirt said. The suspects reportedly plotted to rob Goodman before the meeting.

One of the suspects — thought to be 21-year-old Jaelon Markell Jackson of Brighton Hill Road in Columbia — struggled briefly with Goodman during the attempted robbery before shooting the high school junior. Jackson is wanted on charges of murder, attempted armed robbery, conspiracy and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

He is described as 6-foot-1-inch and about 150 pounds. He has tattoos on his neck and a teardrop tattoo under his right eye.

Shanice Octavia Bradley, 20, of Wilson Street in Sumter, is charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy.

Diontre Brown, 18, of Lorick Road in Blythwood, is charged with murder, attempted armed robbery, conspiracy and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Dequan Lamont Washington, 21, of North Magnolia Street in Sumter, is charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy.

Joshua Smith Jr., 16, of Virginia Drive in Sumter, is being charged as an adult with accessory before the fact of armed robbery, accessory before the fact of murder and conspiracy. He is a junior at Sumter High School, the school district confirmed.

Smith is being held at a state Department of Juvenile Justice facility, and Bradley, Brown and Washington are being held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.

Jackson, who is on probation, and Brown previously pleaded guilty to strong armed robbery and weapons charges for a 2016 carjacking case in Richland County, McGirt said.

All four were detained by officers on Monday and were charged on Tuesday, McGirt said. According to public inmate records, bond for Bradley, Brown and Washington was denied.

Sumter Police Chief Russell Roark III said Goodman's "tragic" and "senseless" death should serve as a reminder of the potential dangers that can take place while attempting to purchase illegal substances.

“The Sumter community has lost a young person — a family has lost a son — at the hands of a group of young people ranging in age from 16 to 21 years old who now must face the consequences," he said in a news release. "No one should ever trivialize the potential long-term and far-reaching effects of illegal drugs on all of us and the future of our community."

Goodman played defensive end for Crestwood's varsity football team, outfield and catcher for the baseball team and shot put and discus for the track team.
