James Richard Cahill Jr., age 87, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
Born on Oct. 8, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late James Richard Cahill and Agnes Roche Cahill. James served in the United States Navy on a destroyer during the Korean conflict and later drove a trolley car in the city of Boston for many years. In his later years, he retired in Sumter. He was known for loving to tell a joke or story and bringing a smile to your face.
He is survived by four children, Dr. James Cahill (Lori) of Sumter, Shirley Guidoboni (Michael) of Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, John Cahill of Bedford, Massachusetts, and Paul Cahill of Telford, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren, Ben Cahill (Cindy), Joseph Cahill (Chloe), Jared Guidoboni, Nicholas Guidoboni, Cynthia Crawford (Shawn), Jessica Eady (Pernell) and Amanda Cahill; six great-grandchildren, Caryna Cotto, Amara Cotto, Anthony Crawford, Lincoln Crawford, Pernell Eady Jr. and James Sterling Cahill; and honorary great-grandchildren, Joseph, Sean and Benjamin Buzhardt of Columbia.
A private graveside service will be held at noon on Friday at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with Monsignor Karl Chimiak officiating. The Honor Guard of the U.S. Navy will provide military honors.
