Juanita Yoakum Byrd-Haygood, age 96, widow of the late Lt. Col. Herman E. Byrd and the late Col. John Calvin Haygood, died on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018.

She was a daughter of the late Lillian Van Bibber Yoakum and A. Greer Yoakum. Ms. Byrd-Haygood was a member of First Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She attended the University of Tennessee and Golden Gate University. She was a retired real estate broker and was a member of the Sumter Board of Realtors and the National Board of Realtors for more than 25 years. She was a former member of Sunset Country Club and the Garden Makers Garden Club. She served as a member of the advisory committee for the marketing technology of Sumter Area Technical College and was a member of the Officer Wives and Thursday Club. She was a past chairman of the Hampton Park Design Review Board and she also served on the Sumter Zoning Adjustment Board and briefly on the Shepherd Center Board. Ms. Byrd-Haygood lived many places as an Air Force wife but had made Sumter her home for the past 50 years. Two of her many interests were golfing and gardening.

She is survived by two sons, Herman Byrd and his wife, Sander, of Texas and Lanny Byrd and his wife, Paula, of Alabama; one daughter, Pamela Byrd Jacob of Sumter; six grandchildren, Justin Holley, Travis, Garrett, Noah, Cole and Courtland Byrd; two sisters, Freda Yoakum Byrd of Tennessee and Kathryn Yoakum Denney of Kentucky; one niece; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Yoakum; three brothers, Glenn, Klye and Ralph Yoakum; and a grandson, Joshua Jacob.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Calvert officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery following the service.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday at First Baptist Church.
