FAIR PLAY (AP) — A man was found dead in the median of a South Carolina interstate and now authorities are asking the public for help figuring out what led up to his death.
Lanny Mest, 53, was likely hit by a vehicle just hours before he was found the morning of April 18 between the north and southbound lanes of I-85 near Fair Play, news outlets reported.
His last known address was in Kentucky, but it's unclear when he last lived there, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said.
In January, Mest was arrested in Florida, Greenville News reported. He spent two months in jail before being released March 27.
On April 11, a week before he was found dead, Mest was arrested and charged in Seneca, South Carolina. Authorities said it's unclear how or when he got there.
Mest was spotted a couple more times after the Seneca arrest, but no details have been reported about his last day, Addis said. Anyone with information was asked to contact the coroner's office or South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Investigators used a fingerprint scanner to identify Mest after his death through a law enforcement database.
"We know he was a drifter and we think he was in several states in the last year or so," Addis said. "But he was a person and he deserves closure just like everybody else."
