Meet Emmy award-winning Bryce Lane at Garden Club meeting on Oct. 9

MANNING - Bryce Lane, a teacher, speaker, horticulturist, a three-time Emmy Award-winning host and producer of UNC-TV's "In the Garden with Bryce Lane" will be the guest speaker for the Manning Council of Garden Clubs' annual meeting at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Weldon Auditorium.

Lane discovered his passion for plants and sharing that information with others when he was in high school and college. As that love continued to grow, Lane earned a BS and MS in Horticulture. He soon began his 34-year tenure at North Carolina State University, where he served as an instructor and undergraduate teaching coordinator. While at NCSU, Lane taught and advised more than 20,000 students. Although he retired in 2014, Lane still teaches part-time at NCSU.

For 11 seasons, Lane hosted and produced "In the Garden with Bryce Lane," earning three Emmy awards during that time.

Lane, who is an avid gardener in his spare time, continues to "creatively cultivate" the same one-quarter-acre plot that he's worked for the past 36 years.

On Oct. 9, Lane will share insights on how to create container gardens. He'll address design principles and cultural growing methods, including containers, potting soil, watering and fertilizing, etc.

According to Lane, pruning is "often one of the most misunderstood garden practices.

"It's important to know how plants grow and how the pruning cuts we make influence their growth," Lane said. "In this talk, we will focus on why we prune, how we prune and when we prune."

Lane's presentation is free to the public, and a couple of lucky attendees will leave with door prizes.
