OPINION: City employees need to concentrate on safe driving

Posted

While driving down Bultman Drive the morning of Nov. 7 at about 9:15 a.m., I passed a City of Sumter pickup truck driving in the right lane and noticed that the driver was holding a sandwich in his left hand and even took a bite of it.

Are city employees allowed to eat (or even hold and use a phone) while driving a city vehicle? If there aren't any rules and/or laws preventing this, then that would help explain why so many of them tend to drive into buildings here in town.

Wish I had noticed the vehicle number so that I could have reported it. I posted this same information on the city's Facebook page, but I guess it requires them to approve it being displayed, which I doubt will happen.

I'm hoping that by posting this to the Letter to the Editor page that a responsible city manager will do something to impress to their employees the need for safety while driving. I can only hope!
