Sheriff's deputies apprehend escapee

According to a news release from Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Sumter deputies quickly apprehended a man who jumped from a Camden Police Department vehicle while traveling in Sumter County near the intersection of U.S. 15 and 521 on Wednesday afternoon.

About 2:30 p.m., Sumter deputies were notified that handcuffed 23-year-old Dekwan Octavaian Slater of Camden escaped while being transported by a Camden police officer.

Nearby schools were temporarily put on lockdown as a precaution.

About 3 p.m., deputies apprehended the man, who was originally arrested for shoplifting. Camden Police Department will determine other charges that might be forthcoming.

“We are proud of our deputies who quickly responded to apprehend this man,” Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said. “No one was injured, and no shots were fired. Deputies relied on their training to bring this escape quickly to an end.”
