Sumter church-based radio station will be opening new studio

Likely Sumter's only locally owned and fully operational church-based radio station is getting a facelift.

Sumter Baptist Temple Senior Pastor Mike Westmoreland spoke Thursday on Sunday's new studio building dedication service and open house for the church's WSSC 1340 AM station, which has moved to the church's property at 2295 Harper St.

Sumter Baptist Temple has owned and operated the station for 22 years at 201 Oswego Road, but now its new location is a new building behind the church, Westmoreland said.

The current 1000-watts-AM station has two employees and plays select programming on weekdays and live streams Fundamental Broadcasting Network - based out of North Carolina - on weeknights and the weekends. Music is traditional Christian and conservative Southern Gospel, he said, and programming also includes a variety of speakers.

The new studio building dedication service will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house will follow to about 5:30 p.m.

Westmoreland invites community members to come out.

"The studio facility is already operating, and it will have FBN content playing at that time," Westmoreland said, "so people can actually walk in the studio and see what we do and where we do it. We'd love to have people come."
