Sumter Liberty STEAM Charter School unveils artist rendering of its campus

This week, Liberty STEAM Charter School administrators unveiled an artist rendering of the public charter's Primary Academy campus, which is currently undergoing renovations. The school is scheduled to open in August for its founding K-1 classes in south Sumter. In the fall, the school will serve 192 students, or "scholars," as it refers to its students. At 15 School St., Liberty STEAM is on a 3-acre site that was originally the Liberty Street Elementary School. Initially constructed in 1954, Liberty provided public education to African-American students in grades 1-6 until desegregation in Sumter County in 1970. According to Liberty STEAM Chief of Staff Trevor Ivey, the site is being carefully designed to preserve the character and many elements of the original campus. This will include the original flagpole from Liberty Street Elementary School that is currently being refurbished to install on the new campus.
