Sumter, surrounding areas are here to help after Hurricane Helene; local organizations are collecting supplies to donate

Our neighbors in North Carolina are still dealing with the effects of Hurricane Helene. To help, various people and places in Sumter and surrounding areas are collecting essentials or financial donations to be delivered to those in need.

DORR FARMS

Dorr Farms has partnered with Three Sisters Essentials in Camden to gather supplies to take to Flat Rock Produce Market in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Kristen Dorr with Dorr Farms hoped that by their travel days on Thursday and Saturday, Dorr Farms will have its 24-foot trailer full of supplies listed below:

Pop-top cans

Non-perishable food items

Granola bars

Dry cereal

Water

Electrolytes

Diapers

Baby formula

Feminine hygiene products

35-gallon trash bags

Bug spray

Def fluid for diesel trucks

Batteries

Work gloves

"As long as people are in need and we can help, we will," Dorr said. "If those are still in need [after Oct. 5], we will make another run."

Items can be dropped off at the farm, 5225 Dorr Acres Road, until Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are also several locations in town where items can be donated: Three Sisters at 2503 Broad St. in Camden, Sumter Farm Bureau Insurance at 90 W. Wesmark Blvd. in Sumter, Foiled Hair Studio at 1337 Peach Orchard Road in Sumter and Lynam Construction at 68 Neeley St. in Sumter.

If you're not close enough to donate but still want to help, cash donations can be sent to $dorrfarms on Cash App or dorrfarms on Venmo.

CHURCH OF THE HOLY COMFORTER

At 213 N. Main St., Church of the Holy Comforter will take supplies until Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, to aid residents in western North Carolina. It is accepting donations of the following items:

Bottled water

Gasoline or oil for chainsaws

Flashlight batteries of various sizes

Generators or propane tanks

Peanut butter

Jelly

Soups

Canned foods of all types

Powdered or canned milk

Matches

Candles

Lighters

Charcoal

Toilet paper

Paper towels

Diapers for newborns to 2-year-olds

Pull-ups for 3-year-olds

Wipes for children and adults

Hand sanitizer

Clorox and other cleaning materials

Items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

CHRIST COMMUNITY CHURCH IN CAMDEN

Christ Community Church in Camden will accept donations of various essential items until Thursday evening, Oct. 3, at the church office, 306 Hampton Park. The following items are being accepted:

Water

Canned food (pull top preferred)

Clothes of all sizes

Cleaning supplies

First-aid supplies

Bleach

Wet wipes

Personal hygiene items

Baby formula

Diapers

Toothbrushes

Toothpaste

CCC Camden looks to deliver the supplies to Brookstone Church in Weaverville, North Carolina, this weekend.

CENTRAL CAROLINA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Central Carolina Community Foundation is accepting financial donations to the One SC Fund at www.OneSCFund.org to support nonprofit organizations across South Carolina responding to needs.

The One SC Fund is a statewide disaster response initiative supported by philanthropic donors, corporate partners and funders from across the state and country. In times of state-declared emergency, the philanthropic community joins together in a unified effort to raise needed money for nonprofits responding to disasters, according to a news release. In coordination with the South Carolina Office of Resilience, an agency of Gov. Henry McMaster's cabinet, resources received by the fund are directed to South Carolina communities most in need.

Charitable contributions can be made to the One SC Fund:

- By mailing a check payable to Central Carolina Community Foundation - One SC to: Central Carolina Community Foundation, 2142 Boyce St., Suite 402, Columbia, SC 29201.

As money is donated, nonprofits providing relief, recovery and rebuilding assistance will be able to apply for a grant at www.YourFoundation.org/one-sc-fund. Individuals are not eligible to apply for a grant.
